Kampala-Namanve-Mukono railway rehabilitation | Uganda

Imathia has delivered the comprehensive rehabilitation of 26.8 km of metre-gauge railway between Kampala, Namanve and Mukono, a strategic project supporting the modernisation of Uganda’s railway infrastructure.

The project marks a milestone for Uganda’s rail sector as the first project of this kind to introduce concrete sleepers. To make this possible, Imathia established a production plant in Kampala-Namanve to manufacture locally the sleepers required for the line renewal.
This industrial capability was integrated with the railway works, enabling a comprehensive solution combining engineering, construction, local production and knowledge transfer. The involvement of Ugandan professionals and workers was also one of the project’s main pillars. Imathia promoted extensive integration of local labour, with a high proportion of female employment, strengthening the project’s social and economic impact and contributing to local skills development.
The works included renewal of the railway infrastructure along the Kampala-Namanve- Mukono corridor, together with interventions at level crossings, turnouts, drainage systems and track formation stabilisation.
The project’s innovative character was further enhanced by Imathia’s development and patenting of a dedicated anti-vandal rail fishplate system, designed to increase the protection of track components and adapt the railway solution to local operating conditions. In addition, the sleeper type developed for the project is based on a unique design specifically adapted to the line’s operational requirements.
